Direct Fed Microbials

Direct-fed microbials, also known as probiotics, are beneficial bacteria that help support digestive balance in animals. The word “probiotic” literally means “for life,” and it’s the opposite of “antibiotic.” Animal probiotics work by boosting the population of good bacteria in the gut, while antibiotics target and eliminate harmful bacteria. For animals, probiotics are often referred to as DFMs, or direct-fed microbials.

Good Bacterial Balance in Animals

Every animal with a digestive system—including humans—relies on a balanced microbiome for proper digestion. Animals have a complex collection of about 100 trillion microorganisms throughout their digestive tract. Within the intestines are billions of bacteria, some beneficial (good bacteria) and some harmful (pathogenic bacteria).

When animals experience stress or environmental change, the natural balance of bacteria can be disrupted. This imbalance may lead to digestive issues such as diarrhea, constipation, and general discomfort. Supplementing with Probios® probiotics may help restore a normal microbial balance in the gut and improve overall animal health.
